Laundry Closet Reveal

One project I’ve been wanting to tackle for some time now has been our laundry closet.

It was certainly functional as-is, but I just wanted to make it fun.  Because why shouldn’t laundry closets be special, too?

Mostly what it needed was a thorough organizing and purging.  I did exactly that, and donated anything we no longer needed and tossed others that were trash.  I then reorganized everything so it fit in individual baskets.

Then, I prepped the area for its makeover.  This included scrubbing the walls and floor, dusting the metal shelves, and repairing holes with spackling paste.  The part that scared me the most was moving around the washer and dryer.  It turned out not being too difficult, however — I just turned off the water to the washer (should be a shut-off valve nearby), unplugged both appliances, and shimmied them out of the laundry area.  Goodness gracious was there a lot of nasty stuff under those appliances that needed to be swept.

Then, I brought in an air compressor, brad nailer, and brad nails to install board and batten on the lower half of the walls.  A full tutorial of how I did this may be found in my original board and batten post.

Once done with the installation, I painted the lattices, cap boards, and the lower portion of the walls with one coat of primer and two coats of Olympic’s “Crumb Cookie” paint.  I chose a semi-gloss finish on the paint because it’d make the walls more scrubbable — especially since this is a laundry closet and it’s prone to mess.

To spice things up, I decided to paint the the upper portions of the walls with Olympic’s “Georgian Leather” in a semi-gloss finish.  I adore this color and used it for our living room, too.  I added a packet of Valspar’s gold paint crystals to the gallon of paint just to make things a little more exciting for the laundry closet.

Then came the first of two fun organization projects.  I had a bunch of mason jars on hand, so I decided to make use of them to help organize my craft supplies that otherwise didn’t have a home.  To do so, I removed the lids of each mason jar and tied three pieces of thin wire around them.

I hung each lid under the bottom metal self by wrapping the wire around the rungs.  Once secured, I snipped off the excess wire.

Then, I screwed the mason jars into place.

Another organization project was to create chalkboard labels for each of the baskets.  To do so, I cut a bunch of 3″ wood pieces from an extra board and batten lattice using a miter saw.
I sanded each piece down to remove any splinters and applied three coats of Valspar’s chalkboard paint for each.
It’s best to let these dry and cure overnight before actually writing on them with chalk.
Using an all-purpose interior adhesive and a caulk gun, I dabbed a line of adhesive on the back of each label…

… and then applied one label to each basket.

Ready for the reveal?

Remember the before…
And here’s the after!

A few details:

My favorite things are these mason jars.  I had my craft supplies stashed all over the house before, and it’s nice to have them all in their own designated places.  And the jars and wire were items that I already had on hand!

These chalkboard labels, too, have proven themselves as lifesavers.  It’s handy to know where everything is at a moment’s notice and feels great to have everything organized.
In all, this project cost me a total of $50 for board and batten materials and various paints.  Not too bad for a weekend makeover!  Hopefully the cheery space will make me more enthused to do laundry now… one can hope!
Hope you like it as much as we do!
