Happy Birthday, Evan!

Today is my husband’s birthday.

I met Evan during my freshman year at Virginia Tech.  He had just switched majors, and sat next to me in his first class as a fellow English major for our British Literature class.  During this time, I was a bit of an outcast at college — I didn’t drink and didn’t go to parties, so I ended up not having a lot of friends.  Evan was the first person I met at Tech who didn’t think any less of me for being… well, me.
We started dating in May 2007.
We were engaged in April 2009.
And we were married in July 2010.

Evan is my best friend.  He’s my goofball, my partner-in-crime, my mentor, my guide.  He loves all the things that I do — watching movies; running around outside; playing with our pups; reading books; writing stories; working on cars; being nerds; rooting for our Hokies, Capitals, and Nationals; and playing all kinds of sports. He’s supported me during the hardest moments of my life, and never fails to say something silly to make me smile.
Evan loves his mom and his younger sister, Anna.  There is a certain smile he gets and a particular way he acts only when he’s around them.  It’s adorable.
Friends, too, play a major role in Evan’s life.  There is absolutely nothing that he wouldn’t do for any of them.
Evan’s favorite activity is to play sports.  He’ll play anything — football, baseball, softball, hockey, wallyball, basketball.  Even if he’s not particularly good at a sport, he’ll still give it his best effort.
I’m lucky to have Evan as my personal handyman.  He’s been invaluable to me ever since we bought our house last October.  He’s plumbed toilets, painted rooms, installed light fixtures and sink faucets, repaired holes, done yardwork… the best thing is that he enjoys doing these things.  He’s always willing to help out with any home project.
I’ve always wanted a house with a lot of pets, and I’m extremely fortunate that Evan has no problem with this dream.  We’ve got our two Corgis, an outdoor cat, and two giant fish tanks.  The reaction that Zubrus and Crash have every time Evan walks through the door is heartwarming.  They idolize their dad and follow him everywhere.
Evan is a huge, huge baseball fan.  His favorite team is the Washington Nationals, but really, going to any live baseball game is his view of heaven.

Evan is dedicated to his job:

He is a fantastic cook:
He’s an avid reader:
He’s still a little kid sometimes:
And he’s not afraid to get emotional at Hokie football games.

Evan, I wish I could accurately express how important you are to me and how much I love and cherish you.  I could not have asked for a better husband than you.  I hope you have a wonderful birthday today, and cannot wait to celebrate many more of your birthdays in the years to come.  Love you!
